GRAPHICS RESEARCH

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HMd59MaBWI- The teaser trailer for the thriller film 'The Strangers' is particularly effective using the theme of photography. The graphics used are create an old fashioned slide show to help tell the outline of the story in a short space of time. This is effective as it starts the film with a laid back tone in contrast with the end which uses short shots to show the action giving limited information on the main story of the film. The slideshow is a recurring theme towards the end of the trailer as they use shots from the end of the theme in the slideshow to replace the original ones. The fonts used are very basic being white with a black background, also with the use of capital letters. This is done to show it is a clear statement with no complication.

The picture above is the poster used for the thriller 'The Strangers'. It shows an image of a woman standing still looking intensely with a person in a mask in the background. This poster only becomes effective after the audience have noticed this. As at first glance it looks like a normal plain woman with the use of wardrobe with her hair being tied up, in an average house using props to show this with the clock on the wall and the piano in the background shows that she is either musical or wealthy. The tagline used at the top creates a query for the audience by using the pronoun 'we're', this also lets them feel part of the story.

The image above is a picture of a promotional poster used for the thriller 'Hostel'. Like the poster used for saw it is simple with using just one picture of gore and the title of the film below the image. The colours used are dirty and dark with browns and greys. Then to highlight a section of the text it is coloured red which represents blood and death. The picture only shows half of the main image with the rest faded into darkness, thsi again leaves the audience left wondering.

The poster above is the original used to promote the film 'saw'. Its a simple poster for a complicated film, the white background and harsh contrast can connote to hospital operating theatre especially with the use of blood and severed limb. The top boarder of the post shows the edge of a dirty saw, this gives us the weapon of how the foot is chopped off but leaves the audience wondering; how? why?

The credits used for this trailer all use the same layout and font just using different text. The text shown is not shown clearly, it has a spotlight which pans across the text. Representative of the theme of voyeurism throughout the film. In the shots it has the text repeated in the background in a much larger size which can create confusion to the eye once again following the themes of the film. The colours used are dull and dark with a cloudy texture which represents the stereotypical views of horror.

Overall after researching graphics we have discovered that all of them used are fairly simple in the posters always having something hidden in the picture giving limited information to the films storyline. With the trailers fonts they have usually been in capital letters to show the bold statements directed at the audience showing no comedy features.
